Sunshine got clobbered on Facebook in 2011, so it was heartening to see it learned its lesson well. Sunshine’s “Ski the day before we open” Twitter draw could only be won through participation, and as a result it had a very strong viral component. From moments after the launch until the drawing of the 20 winners’ names, Sunshine was trending in Alberta on Twitter. Sunshine used the promotion to tout the Sunshine-Marmot discount cards, and invited media to join the winners. The end result was a huge jump in Twitter followers, 500 entries, a seven percent increase in Twitter followers and Facebook fans, a great news story for the media pre-season, and 20 advocates who had a fabulous first day. This audience relies heavily on social media content and opinions from friends and brands to help decide their ski holiday destinations. We saw this audience gave us the best opportunity to enhance awareness and engagement.

That certainly hasn’t all gone. The Support Ski Patrol wronged by Sunshine Village Facebook page is still active and has almost 8000 fans.
However, where once Sunshine Village simply took their Facebook page down to prevent their fans ‘engaging’, now they are celebrating them.
Almost every day since March, they have been changing their Timeline Cover Photo to include the ‘Sunshiner of the Day’ – a great way to keep your fans engaged and feeling connected to the brand.
Best & worst use of Facebook timeline image in the ski industry
Facebook latest redesign for brands provides ski resorts with a lot bigger space to showcase their resort in the timeline cover. Some good uses of the timeline cover include: snow reports uploaded daily, upcoming events, focus on night life or show village activities. I see a lot of creativity from ski resorts and some really cool images are popping up on Facebook.

The best use of the Facebook timeline image in the ski industry comes from Sunshine Village Ski&Snowboard Resort from Banff (Alberta) Canada. Each day they feature a new image of a fan on their Timeline under the clever name Sunshiner of the Day.
