Social Media Management agency for the Oil and Gas Industry in Calgary, Alberta.Very few companies in the oil and gas industry are on social media, even less are active on it. This is a missed opportunity for the industry as a whole, but a big opportunity for those early adopters. You’re probably asking yourself, “Where’s the ROI for our oil and gas company on social media?”. Like just about every business, you’re in business to make money. What social media will do is help keep the machine moving and oiled. Here’s how:

  1. Being a part of the conversation – Even if that conversation is negative, it’s better that you are a part of it and know what’s being said about you. This may include fixing the facts and educating those who are misinformed. This can be done with the help of monitoring software.
  2. Recruiting – If you are highlighting your progress on interesting projects and technologies, you’ll start to attract the talent that wants to work on the projects that will advance their career. This is also a great way to promote the job openings you do have available.
  3. Pride/Moral – You and your employees are proud of the work you’ve done and by showcasing it, it brings pride into the workplace knowing your team has done something to be proud of.
  4. Event participation – Next time you’re at a conference, take note of what the audience is doing. It’s likely most are on their smart phone, laptop or tablet while the speaker is on and participating in the conversation using something like a Twitter hashtag.
  5. Education – There is a lot of misinformation out there by large groups who are on social media. This gives you a platform to dispel those myths and educate your followers on some of the environmental initiatives you do.
  6. Crisis Communication – Did a pipeline burst? Was there a large oil spill created by your company? Maybe it wasn’t even your company that created the crisis but you’re being accused of it? No one wants a crisis to happen but when it does, having your own social media platform will allow you to tell the story rather than have someone else tell it for you.
  7. Branding – This is how people perceive your business and their experience with your business. This experience can often be shaped more by what you stand for such as your vision and values, than solely by the services or products you provide. Social Media allows you to offer the tone of voice you want people to see you as such as positive, upbeat, charitable or environmental champion.
  8. Value – Unlike other advertising mediums such as TV, radio and newspapers, after you gain a follower there is a very high percentage that you will still retain that follower a few years from now allowing you to still speak your message at no additional cost. Social Media advertising also allows you to target based on certain demographics more than any other medium.
  9. Communication to your shareholders – You can be more than just a name on a piece of paper to your shareholders and stockholders. Are you announcing a big project or higher than expected returns? Getting that message out to the right people can send your stock prices soaring.
  10. Public Relations - Many large projects are dependent on government approval. A government that in most countries is elected by the people. This gives you a platform to address the public and let them know about the benefits your project will bring such as economic windfall, higher employment rate, etc.

  1. Why your business should be on social media.Personal Relationships with your customers - For centuries, business was done through person-to-person relationships. Our desire to buy from those that we know, like, and trust and to be treated fairly has not changed. However, the 20th century brought innovations that tilted the odds for those who learned to market to a mass in communicating the same way. Social media gives us more an opportunity to serve our markets better and break away from the competition by allowing more human connections than ever before. We can reach mass audiences in ways never imagined by 20th century marketing practices. Brands that understand and allow this into new data, new connections and new experiences to tailor the company’s offerings face a bright future.
  2. Top of mind awareness – Just like TV, Radio and Newspaper commercials that you see over and over again, the reason for this is so your customer remembers your name when they are making their buying decision. A strong Social Media program with frequent updates can give your followers this top of mind awareness.
  3. Branding – This is how people perceive your business and their experience with your business. This experience can often be shaped more by what you stand for such as your vision and values, than solely by the services or products you provide. Social Media allows you to offer the tone of voice you want people to see you as such as positive and upbeat.
  4. Value – Unlike other advertising mediums such as TV, radio and newspapers, after you gain a follower there is a very high percentage that you will still retain that follower a few years from now allowing you to still speak your message at no additional cost.
  5. Building Relationships – Chances are your personal friends are more likely to buy from you instead of your competitor, that’s because they know you and like you. Social Media is about building relationships too. Social Media done right from an experienced Social Media Specialist will build that personal relationship with your followers.
  6. Two billion people are online – 85% of those two billion people expect businesses to be active on Social Media.
  7. Education – Depending on your industry, there may be a lot of misinformation about what you do, like for example the oil and gas industry. This gives you a platform to dispel those myths and educate your followers on some of the environmental initiatives you do.
  8. Customer Service – This is one more way a customer can contact you in real time, and when you respond back to their inquiry in real time they will be amazed.
  9. Recruiting – If you are highlighting your progress on interesting projects and technologies, you’ll start to attract the talent that wants to work on the projects that will advance their career.
  10. Pride/Moral – You and your employees are proud of the work you’ve done and by showcasing it, it brings pride into the workplace knowing your team has done something to be proud of.
  11. Event Participation – Next time you’re at a conference, take note of what the audience is doing. It’s likely most are on their smart phone, laptop or tablet while the speaker is on and participating in the conversation using something like a Twitter hashtag.
  12. Crisis Communication – No one wants a crisis to happen but when it does, your own large platform will allow you to tell the story rather than have someone else do it for you.
  13. Sales - Social Media will help in generating qualified leads and sales.
  14. Happy Customers - What price do you put on having a happy customer? Social Media is just one more way for your customer to interact with your business whether it be a complaint, suggestion or inquiry on your product or service.
  15. Link Building - Social Media is a way to drive customers to your website or any other link you wish to promote.
  16. Suggestion Box - People are way more likely to use your Social Media as a suggestion box rather than the one on your counter.
  17. Being a part of the conversation – Even if that conversation is negative, it’s better that you are a part of it and know what’s being said about you. This may include fixing the facts and educating those who are misinformed. This can be done with the help of monitoring software.

A study at the University of Cambridge earlier this year analyzed the Facebook likes of more than 58,000 users in the U.S. and concluded that it was possible to gain information such as political affiliation and ethnicity just from seeing users’ likes, and that those likes were accurate in predicting traits such as sexuality, race, and political affiliation.

Social marketing company Wishpond expressed the study’s findings in visual form in the infographic below, pointing out that the average Facebook user has more than 150 likes.
